Promoting Water Efficiency and Hydrocitizenship in Young People’s Learning about Drought Risk in a Temperate Maritime Country

Engaging young citizens with drought risk and positive water behaviours is essential in domestic demand management within the wider climate crisis. This paper evaluates a new research-informed, picture book—‘DRY: The Diary of Water Superhero’—that explores UK drought. book’s development was underpinned by research Drought Risk You (DRY) project. concept storyline were co-produced an interdisciplinary team, including creative practitioner. focused on key themes: definitions types; myths; adaptation people’s (YP) agency. Characters co-created to promote YP’s autonomy as change agents, encourage intergenerational community learning. book from three perspectives: YP, trainee teachers (TT) teachers. Emergent themes are triangulated: sensitive issue, subject knowledge changes behaviour, misconceptions about place. TT also contemplated their improved barriers engaging behaviours. Teachers reflected classroom use book, prior experiences teaching drought, curriculum context st/age YP engaged. reflects how these insights feed into school practice industry outreach, developing effective learning resources that valuing water, behaviour hydrocitizenship among communities.
